Crisis in Italy
The Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has declared the government of right-wing legacy and populist five-star movement to be over. “The current crisis inevitably jeopardizes the work of the government that ends here,” Conte said Tuesday in the Senate in Rome. He also announced his resignation. He will submit the corresponding application to President Sergio Mattarella.
At the beginning of his eagerly awaited speech on the domestic crisis, Conte had criticized the far-right Interior Minister Matteo Salvini as “irresponsible.” When Salvini quit the ruling coalition on 8 August, he “persecuted his own interests and that of his party,” the Lega, Conte said Tuesday in front of the Senate in Rome . The Minister of the Interior, who is also the deputy head of government, exposed Italy to “serious risks”. Salvini resisted the criticism and said he would do it the same way.
Salvini had the coalition with the five-star movement burst on 8 August. However, a submitted by the party motion of censure against the non-party Conte failed initially at the resistance of the Five Stars and the Social Democratic opposition party PD, which already discussed ways of government cooperation.
But whether Contes’s resignation calls for the quick new elections demanded by Salvini is uncertain. The stars and the opposition Social Democrats of the Partito Democratico (PD) could thwart the plan. They are currently exploring a way to jointly salvage Salvinis Lega. How such a pact could look like is currently still open.
